Huntington's Disease (HD), is a progressive neurological degenerative disorder. HD controls body movements (chorea), thinking (cognitive) and behavior. It breaks down nerve cells in the brain. HD causes mood swings, depression, anxiety, short term memory loss, problems swallowing, and personality changes. It's a fatal and inherited disease. Every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the disease.
Huntington's Disease is described as having Alzheimer's, ALS and Parkinson's simultaneously.
At this time, there is not cure for Huntington's Disease. There isn't anything available to slow or stop the progression. Clinical trials are currently taking place, however, they do take time. The truth of the matter is, time just isn't on our side.
What Is JHD?
JHD is Juvenile Huntington's Disease and it occurs in those younger than 21 years old. It's more aggressive and progresses faster than HD does in adults. Those with JHD can experience seizures that are difficult to manage, cognitive decline, diminished coordination, behavior changes, and dystonia, which is where their bodies become rigidity. Some of the other symptoms include: problems swallowing, loss of balance, and drooling. The reality of this disease is, kids with JHD are dying. Parents are losing their children every day. That's not ok with us! We need more people using their voices for JHD. I'm going to be one of those people.
